Excerpt
He sensed her before he saw her. The soft thud of her boots, whispers in the air, the intoxicating scent of her perfume. Not wanting to ruin the moment, he kept his eyes averted until he finished his call. When he finally looked up, he saw an angel, dressed as the devil, to tempt him beyond original sin.
“Hello, Mr. Mob Boss.”
Hunger like he’d never known before took over him at the sound of her voice—husky and throaty in a way that made him think about pushing her to places where they would both lose their self-control.
She tapped her foot, and his gaze dropped to her boots. Cristo! She rocked her sexy punk clothes like no other woman he’d met, and more than anything he wanted to get under her skin. He wanted to know what made her tick, what music she listened to, what she liked to eat, and whether her apartment was as offbeat as her clothes. He wanted to know what it was about her that made a powerful Toscani capo with an empire to run want to spend the evening in a pool hall waiting for her to appear.
“Mia.” Her name on his lips was a sensual treat. “You’re lucky I’m a patient man.”
She snorted a laugh. “You are not a patient man. A patient man would have waited to bump into me on the street or at a wedding or a funeral, of which I expect there will be many after people see you here with me. An impatient man lays siege until he gets what he wants.”
“Do I get what I want?” He leaned forward and licked his lips, his entire being focused on her. An entire SWAT team could have run into the building throwing grenades and shooting machine guns, and he would have been totally unable to drag his gaze away.
“Depends what it is.”
“How about you in my bed?” He wasn’t usually so direct with the women he was trying to seduce, but playing it safe wasn’t going to work with a strong woman like Mia. He had to prove himself worthy and he could only do that by taking risk. Although he tried to convince himself he had come to honor a debt, the reality was he couldn’t stay away.
“You’ve wasted one of your three wishes. Try again.”
Nico frowned. “I thought I was forgiven.”
“Because I accepted a ride from you, and you fixed my car? Because I gave you a little thank-you kiss? Gratitude for a kind deed doesn’t equal forgiveness. And forgiveness doesn’t equal sex.”
Sex.
His assessing gaze drifted down her body, taking in the quick flutter of the pulse in her neck, the slight flush on her cheeks, and the bead of her nipples pressed against her thin tank top. He felt the impact of her desire deep in his groin. Fuck. Thirty seconds with her and he was perilously close to losing his self-control. Again.
“Are you done checking me out, Mr. Mob Boss?”
Cristo. Every word from her mouth went straight to his cock. Women didn’t talk to Nico with amused disdain. They didn’t accept his gifts and walk away. They didn’t make him wait three hours in a pool hall for the honor of their presence.
“You are a beautiful woman,” he said honestly. “You deserve a man who knows how to please a woman in bed.”
Her lips tipped at the corners, and she walked without hesitation between his parted legs sending all the wrong messages to the right part of his body. “And that would be you?”
“Yes.”
Heat sizzled in the air between them, and she dropped her gaze but, not before he saw the truth in her eyes. Yes, she wanted him. But she was going to make him work damn hard for the privilege of finding out what she hid beneath those badass punk clothes.
Boldly, he smoothed his hand up her thigh to curve around her hip. Pulling her closer, he gestured her down, pressed his lips to her ear. “You are wet for me, bella. Hot. I hear your need in the quickness of your breath, see it the flush in your cheeks, your nipples tight and begging for my touch, and if I stroked you, gently rubbed my thumb over your clit, you would come for me, and you would scream my name.”
Her breath hitched, ever so softly, and then she pulled away. “Save the sweet words for the women who are awed by your mobster charm.”

EXCERPT:
That night around eleven fifteen, as I poured myself a drink from the minibar, I heard a knock on my hotel room door. When I opened it, I found Alex on the other side. She stepped backward in the hallway and sucked in a deep breath.

“Sorry to bother you and Kathryn,” she said as her cheeks grew pink. “But we need to chat.”

“That’s fine. You’re not bothering us. Besides, she’s already asleep in the other room,” I said, and glanced over my shoulder down the length of the suite. Kathryn’s door remained closed. Good. I turned back to Alex. “And I never go to bed this early.”

“Well, I was thinking about something on the agenda for tomorrow, and I didn’t think it should wait until the morning.”
“No problem,” I said, taking in the sight of her. “In fact, you’re just in time for a nightcap.” I held up the mini bottle of Maker’s Mark. “What do you say to a drink while we talk it over?”

She hesitated, then shrugged. “All right.”

“You like bourbon, don’t you?”

“Sure do,” she said as she glided into the room, still wearing the black skirt and white oxford shirt from earlier. I shut the door behind us and focused on her round, tight ass as she walked to the couch on the far end of my suite.

Damn.

“How you do like it?” she said as she sat down. “Straight up or on the rocks?”

“Straight up.” I grinned, took another bottle from the minibar, handed it to her and took a seat in the burgundy armchair across from the sofa. “Bottoms up.” I raised the bottle and she tipped her back to me. She downed the alcohol in a smooth shot, and I followed her lead.

“Whew,” she said. “Not bad.”

“You seem like you have some experience with this kind of thing.”

She sank further into the couch. “You don’t get out of Tulane without learning how to drink.”

“Of course, I remember now. You told me about Tulane that night at Old Ebbit.” I paused. “I’m trying to think what I know about that school. Hmm. The students named the mascot Pecker, didn’t they?”

“Guilty as charged. Of course, they wouldn’t let us keep that name.” She sighed. “But Riptide the Pelican just doesn’t have the same…ring.”

EXCERPT

He says, quietly, Vic wants me to quit.
I go still.
Because of all the things I expected, that wasn't anywhere on my list.
I'd heard about Dimitri and Victor before I found out he was joining Fractal Ends. Dimitri was notorious in the industry for being a hard worker and a wild card when it came to publicity. Not because he got himself in trouble. But because no one--not even Dimitri--could predict what he would do next. But I'd hear of him because he was a social media darling, and he was with Victor Vanes. Dimitri helped Vic get his start, performed with Silence of Screams for the first few years when they were still in a shitty van and shittier venues. When Dimitri was writing their music because they couldn't afford to buy songs.
They clawed their way to the top with each other, using the other to feed their own dreams, despite the press and the PR people. Despite groupies and tours and long weeks on set, they did it. Dimitri landed on Fractal Ends and Victor landed on the Billboard Top 10.
And they stayed together. They were the only people besides my parents who were high school sweethearts and managed to make it work.
Why? I ask, because the reason Dimitri and Vic work is because they support each other. Always.
I frown when he shrugs and looks away, that desolate expression slipping into his eyes again.
He takes another sip from the bottle and I watch, unable to look away.
Ever think what you've got isn't what you want? he asks, tempering the shocking question with a wry smile.
Every fucking day.
But
Dee, I whisper. you love Vic.
He nods and laughs. I do. That's what makes this so fucking hard.
I take the bottle from him when he takes another too long swig. Drinking for the wrong reason sure as hell won't solve anything. He sulks, turning his attention back to the screen where Cari is kissing some guy I think is supposed to be her boss. Or the one trying to kill her.
Misunderstood heroes or some shit. She rolled her eyes pretty hard when she read that part of the screen.
Hes jealous, Dimitri says suddenly and I glance at him. He's close again. Closer than he was a few seconds ago and it makes me nervous.
My voice is low and a little too raspy when I ask, Of what?
He grins, this wide, devil-may-care thing that I know enough to have a split-second of worry, and then he's kissing me.
For a heartbeat, there's this disconnect. I've wanted this for so damn long that it doesn't add up and I go still and startled under his lips.
He seems to realize that I'm not into it and starts to pull away and that wakes me up. I throw an arm around his shoulders and yank him back to me.

Publication date: November 18th 2016
Genres: Adult, Romantic Suspense, Political Thriller
She has no idea what she’s doing. Loose cannons never hit their targets.
And they take out plenty of collateral damage.
Four years ago Lindsay experienced the unspeakable right before me, and I couldn’t stop them.
But that’s all changed now.
When her father, Senator Bosworth, contacted me to ask — demand — that I protect her, it was a second chance. A shot at redemption.
An opportunity to right an unspeakable wrong.
Controlling Lindsay as she seeks her revenge on the monsters who hurt her won’t be hard.
Containing my own out-of-control feelings for Lindsay and keeping up this ruse of cold-blooded distance will be.
Even harder than admitting to her what really happened that night four years ago.
It turns out I don’t have to, though.
Someone else did it for me.
And I’ll make sure they regret it.

A Harmless Little Ruse is the second in this political thriller/romantic suspense trilogy by USA Today bestselling author Meli Raine. This series includes:
A Harmless Little Game (Now available)
A Harmless Little Plan (release date December 13, 2016)
EXCERPT:
I wake up to an empty bed.
It’s not mine.
Lindsay’s gone.
I can feel a change in the air. I jump to my feet, instantly alert, blood pumping to arms and legs that are battle-ready. Her bedroom room smells like lavender and beeswax, mingled with the hot scent of sex. I swear her heat still lingers on the sheets. The ceiling fan is still, the room crackling with silence.
I grab my gun belt and —
What the hell?
My weapon is missing.
Gun’s gone.
Lindsay’s gone.
Oh, shit.
She didn’t?
She did.
“Gentian,” I bark as I shove my earpiece in. “Where’s Lilac?” Lilac’s her code name.
“With you,” he responds.
“Negative.”
Dead air.
“Gentian?”
“I don’t know, sir. No one’s seen her. Last we knew, she was locked in her bedroom with you.”
No trace of irony. No hint of teasing. If he had even one whiff of either, he’d have his ass handed to him.
And he knows it.
“She’s gone, Gentian. Find her.”
“Yes, sir.”
The instant flurry of activity in the house matches my organs. They rearrange themselves inside me as I assess the situation, which is pretty fucking simple.
Lindsay stole my gun and ran away.
Doesn’t get much simpler than that.
Last night was the first time in four damn years that I slept. Actual REM sleep. The night those bastards tortured us was the first night of my new life.
A life without sleep.
And last night?
I slept like someone who had finally come home.
“Jesus,” I mutter to myself. “Great job, Drew. She totally snowed you.”
I have to hand it to Lindsay. She fooled me. I believed her act the entire time. She managed to outwit us all.
Damn smart woman.
Damn dangerous, too.

Collecting the Pieces

My stomach felt all funny looking at Abel and since my brain was soaked in alcohol none of my mental roadblocks went up. The man really was something else even being rude and cocky. My fingers itched to touch his beard and to trace his lips.

“How’s the arm?”

“Ten stitches.”

“Jesus Christ.” That quickly his demeanor changed to one of incredulity and, I’m pretty sure, disgust. “You’re drunk.”

“Tipsy.”

“What the fuck? You’re a doctor and you’re mixing pain meds and alcohol?”

I snorted, an unattractive sound yes, but it couldn’t be helped. “You’re an ass. You know that, right?”

Surprise, it was quick, but I definitely saw it rolling over his face. “And you’re an idiot. What kind of VMD are you?”

Even drunk, my blood boiled. Prick. “What makes you think I’m mixing drugs and alcohol?”

He glanced at my arm. “Ten stitches.”

“Not that it is any of your business, but I’m not on pain meds. Thank you so much for your concern though.”

It wasn’t surprise this time, but something else flashed in those unusual eyes before he said, “I’m just trying to figure you out.”

“You don’t need to do that, figure me out. Every time I’m near you I want to run away screaming.” Or jump you and kiss that damn smirk off your face. “I irritate you just as much, so focus your energies on the countless women in town who actually want your company.”

“See, now that just sounds like a challenge.”

“Seriously. Did you bang your head recently? You might be suffering from brain trauma.”

He had the oddest expression on his face and then that head dipped back and he roared with laughter. “You have a sense of humor too.”

“I wasn’t joking.”

This only made him laugh harder.

My phone buzzed. Rylee was out front. “I’ve got to go.”

“See you around, Doc.”

“Is that threat?”

“No, babe, a promise.”

“Fabulous.”

He was still laughing when the door closed behind me.
