“Miss? Excuse me, but do you have a minute?”

Turning around, recognition dawns in his eyes instantly.

“It’s you.”

He nods his head. “It’s me.”

“What are you doing here?”

“What are you—”

Since we’re asking the same question, at the same time, I stop mid sentence. After what seems like several minutes of staring at each other, I finally snap out of it when he asks the first question.

“It is you. I knew it! Didn’t you used to work here?”

“Yeah. I worked here for about four years. Stopped a while ago, shortly after the encounter with your friend, Mr. Grips-A-Lot, actually.”

Laughter fills his eyes. “Mr. Grips-A-Lot?”

Embarrassment floods my face.

I can’t believe I called him that outloud, and to his friend!

Trying to laugh off the embarrassment, I plow ahead. “Yeah, well, I uh, I have a silly habit of giving people Mr. and Ms. nicknames. His name is obviously Mr. Grips-A-Lot because of the way he grabbed my arm the first time. I’m thinking of changing it to Devlin the Devil. How are you even friends with that guy?”

“A question I ask myself several times a day. He’s a fantastic lawyer, a pitbull really, but he has a very hard time shutting that side of him off, so I step in and smooth things over when I can.”

Taking in his words, I see the sincerity behind them. Even though his friend is a jerk, he still watches out for him. I have to give the guy some credit. It can’t be an easy thing to do.

“Well, you're a better man than I am I don’t know if I could do that day in and day out.”

“If you saw what he can do in a courtroom, you might change your mind. Listen. Gently reaching out, he takes hold of my hand. ‘To apologize, let me buy you a drink?”

“Oh, I don’t know. I’m supposed to be here with my friends celebrating.”

The heat from his embrace is climbing up my arm. It’s feels like a warm blanket.

“Yeah? What are you celebrating?”

I snap out of the warm dreamlike spell from this man’s touch and instantly feel all of the blood draining from my face.

Oh shit. What do I say?

Of course he would ask what we’re celebrating. It’s a perfectly natural question. I finally sputter, “It-it’s really a celebration of a, uhm, a new beginning.”

He squeezes my hand while he holds my gaze for several beats before he asks, “Yours?”

I slowly nod. He tilts my chin back up to face him with his free hand.

His warm hand cups my cheek, and I lean into the palm of his hand, seeking more contact without even giving it a second thought.

“Good.” he says again.

Hearing him repeat it warms my heart a bit. It’s a strange feeling after all this time. With just one word, it feels like he’s saying a thousand more.

Good, I’m glad you’re not attached.”

“Good, I’m glad I found you at this moment.”

“Good, I’m glad you can now be mine.”

rae-daniels   About Rae Daniel: Thanks for visiting my site! I’m the one who would rather be reading or writing than doing basically anything else like sleeping, eating, drinking…well, I can drink at the same time actually. I’m a multi-tasker. Boxed wine actually…because I’m a classy b!tc4 like that. The only things that tear me away from writing and reading are my kids, the hubby, and my day job, but I have to say that about work so I don’t get fired. They don’t know that I read or write while I wait in between meetings, during meetings, on lunch breaks, in the restroom (Okay no, not then, that’s just gross). Basically anywhere I can.
